Spinal Cord Injury Patients and disability program
In Nepal disability is regarded as from punishment given by the God. Having a disabled member in the family affects the social reputation and relation of whole family. Worst enough, the social, physical structure is in accessible to people with disabilities and they are mostly denied with basic human right i.e. Food, health care, education, employment etc. Particularly, for person with Spinal Cord Injured (SCI) most of them have to confined within their house because of negative social attitudes, these people are not welcome for social participation. Most of the places for instance, the buildings of public and private houses are not wheelchair friendly to such people creating a big social barriers for the people. Assistive or mobility devices are not easily available in the country and the very few imported items are out a reach of poor disabled people and children.
In this scenario, we are striving hard to address the general issues that every people with disabilities facing and problem faced by Spinal cord injured and paralyzed people because of unique nature of their disability. SCIF –NEPAL has been running by the people who advocates for disabled and helpless people and the children. It is entirely a non-governmental and non- profit making organization which serves a community of disabled people in Nepal with both Spinal Cord Injured and other physical disabilities. People with physical disabilities in particular spinal cord injury many all them are bound to get confined to their homes.
Remarkably , the society have different attitudes towards these people which they experience with in their communities .But it is also compounded by the fact that is physical structure of the majority of public and private buildings in Nepal not accssiable for the wheel chair users. In addition to this assistive or mobility devices are not available in the country and few imported items are generally out of reach to disabled people of low socio-economic status. Therefore, this organization aims to address the issue of basic human rights for people with the disabilities and promote social inclusion through improved access to family take care, health care, vocational skills, and employment.
